About Anna Ceramics

Joanna Richards of Anna Ceramics

Anna Ceramics is an online gallery showcasing the work of ceramic artist Joanna Richards.

Joanna Richards graduated from UWIC in 1999, with a B.A.(Hons.) in Ceramics. Beginning her career as a potter and ceramicist at Rumney Pottery in Cardiff, she soon developed her own distinctive style, and set up as an independent ceramic artist in 2004.

Joanna's ceramic art has been exhibited at various craft fairs and galleries in South Wales, including the Crescent Gallery in Cardiff and the Art Emporium and Enterprising Art in Newport. She also enjoys providing demonstrations of her skills, and in 2006 was asked to do so for HRH Prince Charles, who was also presented with a specially-commissioned piece of her work.

Inspired by natural forms and the cycle of life, the distinctive style of Anna Ceramics owes much to Joanna's close observation of bones, bark, shells and other organic objects. After hand-crafting each piece and applying a coloured slip, impressions of these natural objects are used to create textured details. These natural patterns are then highlighted with oxides before the final firing.

Anna Ceramics produces a wide range of practical products, including goblets, vases, tea lights and urns, as well as purely decorative ones such as individual sculptures and special commissions. Each piece is completely hand-made and unique, a true blend of craft and nature, form and function.

Joanna is always happy to discuss ideas for new products or individual commissions, as well as to undertake demonstrations of her work to interested groups. Please contact Anna Ceramics for more information.
